Richard Hughes
 On Saturday's

J Margaret Clarke Turfcall Factual Comment.

HUGHESIE AROUND THE WORLD
“ You need to hit the gate in the States. "

“I HAVE been lucky enough to get to the Breeders’ Cup most years. The sense of anticipation   as soon as you board the plane to fly over is absolutely huge; of course, if you didn’t feel that you wouldn’t be going because it’s a long way to travel and can leave you out of pocket if you have no chance of winning.

“You need a very good, sharp horse to go there and win. There is no margin for error at the start. A horse doesn’t have time to warm up in a race in the United States; the horse gets to hit the gate running. Belmont might have the longest straight, but you still need good pace to hold a position in the early stages before you reach it.

“Jockeys from Britain are under no illusion when we get out there about the importance of leaving the stalls quickly.

“The procedure at the start in the US is very different to what it is over here. The stall handlers hold on to your mount – with the horses’ noses touching the gate-until the mechanism is released and they’re away.

“As we all know, that doesn’t happen in Britain where you could be left standing in the stalls on your own for two or three minutes, so it’s a totally different ball game for our horses. Believe me, you are playing with fire if you go to America and allow one of the handlers to hold your horse’s head in the gate.

“As soon as the stalls open you have to fight for an early position you know the first turn is going to come up quickly; You have got to hope you make the bend on the correct leg because they turn so quickly; if your on the wrong leg some of the others can be halfway round before you know what’s happened.

“There are big differences in riding style, too. Over there a jockey is happy to sit 2-2-2 as the field spreads out, but in the US some are happy to sit six or seven wide; they don’t want to get trapped on the inside.

“I would always prefer to go down the inner and take my chance rather than go six or seven wide. It didn’t work when Sky Lantern ran in the Juvenile Fillies Turf a couple of years ago, but it all opened up for Chriselliam’s brilliance that night – she sadly died after failing to recover from a foot infection in February – another thing fresh in the memory relates to my valet. He wanted $3,000-ten percent of my share in the prize-money just for handing me a set of colours. We had  to come to an arrangement afterwards!

“We all remember how good Steve Cauthen was when he came to Britain. It took a while for him to adapt, but he changed the face of British racing, with jockeys riding with their toe in the iron.

“The top US riders are very good. Mike Smith, who will be fifty next year, is probably still the fittest person in the world and a great jockey, but I’m not so sure about those further down the pecking order. I also believe our horses are superior to theirs and would always encourage a European trainer to take them on.

“The stewards are very relaxed out there, but everybody knows where they stand .  If you interfere with an apponent you’ll get thrown out- that’s the rule and everybody accepts it. “

The US have this one interference rule in place, and rightly so. This rule needs to be the same worldwide in horseracing. Otherwise it is dreadfully unfair on the international jockeys.  It is a key safety rule, that the British bloodhorse illiterate horseracing stewards fail to realise by always giving the race to the horse who causes the interferance . Interference is interference no matter what country you are riding in, and highly dangerous, life threatening as wel

A tragedy that Chriselliam lost her life in February 2014 at home through a nasty infection.

You will notice that Richard is very tall, he has to keep his weight right all the time, a massive achievement.

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF  'TOAST OF NEW YORK '

As published in the Racing Post on Thursday July 3rd.
Jamie Osborne continues a daily diary leading up to Toast Of New York's run in Saturday's
Grade 1 Belmont Derby.

"QUARANTINE no problem as good rest better than any work. "

"The process involved in transporting Toast Of New York across the Atlantic at first appears quite complex. But it's made simpler thanks to the expert shipping agent Luke Greayer, which is headed by Nick Luck's brother James. Surprisingly, there's no freight service that will carry horses directly to New York from the UK.

"As a consequence, last Friday at noon Toast and Jimmy (McCarthy, assistant trainer/work rider) loaded on to an LRT lorry, with their first stop at Kingsclere to collect Side Glance. From there it was a road trip, via Eurotunnel, to Liege in Belgium. Nine hours later, after a brief leg stretch, both horses stepped onto a pallet that would then be lifted into the hold of a TNT Boeing 777 freighter plane along with a couple of Jaguars- that's the car not the cat - and other assorted extras.

"To the uninitiated it all sounds rather frightening, but the procedure has stood the test of time over many years and it is all done under the expert guidance of Brian  Taylor, son of Snow Knight's 1974 Derby-winning jockey of the same name.

"As we'd hoped, Toast was his normal laid-back self. He munched his hay, drank plenty and had a nap en route before landing six hours and four minutes later at JFK.

"With the pallet lifted off, Toast said goodbye to Side Glance, who runs at Monmouth Park on Sunday, and walked straight up the ramp of an articulated horse transporter. Around 15 minutes later he was in the quarantine station at Belmont Park racecourse. After a two-hour wait his feed arrived, having cleared customs, and he was fed and relaxed in his new surroundings.

"Quarantine regulations meant he couldn't be ridden on the track until Monday morning. This wasn't a problem, however, as a good rest for 48 hours is more beneficial than any amount of work.

"Weight loss, or lack of it, is a great gauge as to how well a horse has taken the travelling. On the journey to Dubai he lost eight kilos, which took him a day and a half to recover. Sadly, we can only guess at the impact this time as Jimmy had been unable to locate a set of weighing scales in Belmont. Seemingly, US trainers don't see the benefit of knowing how much their horses weigh, Having observed the different work policies of  trainers in the week leading up to the Dubai World Cup meeting this year, it's clear there are no hard and fast rules. We decided not to gallop Toast during that week, he merely cantered sedately for a mile on the track. We'll engage the same approach this time and are hoping to be allowed to do it on the grass this morning. If not, the dirt will have to suffice.

"I've never understood why horses are galloped too close to a race. I don't see how it can increase fitness and I feel it's more likely to draw on a horse's reserves and risk a diminished performance. Toast has done all the galloping he needs. The work is in the bank.

"All Jimmy and I need to do now is to keep him eating and drinking, check his temperature and keep him safe and happy. And guard him with our lives. "

TOAST

Racing Post Published on Wednesday July 2, Page 5

"SHEIKH MOHAMMED pulled off the greatest feat of naming in modern racing history in 1998 when coming up with Dubai Millennnium for his Seeking The Gold colt who went on to win  the 2000 Dubai World Cup.

"It is clear that much thought , planning and skill went into that decision . Sadly, neither Michael Buckley nor I can claim the same level of foresight.

"When, 12 months ago, the form we filled in landed on the desk in the naming department at Weatherbys, only a certifiable over-optimistic lunatic could have envisaged that a year later Toast Of New York could be about to pull off one of the greatest naming flukes of all time by winning the Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational in New York.

"Toast as he is now affectionately known to us all here, and the 17,000 Twitter followers who have been on the receiving end of my obsessive bombardment for the last  six months or so, is now thankfully safely ensconced at Belmont Park.

"The horse who at one stage appeared more likely to go no further than Market Rasen in later life will now attempt to add the winning share of $1.25 million to the $ 1.2m he won in the UAE Derby.

"Having been detached from him since last Friday, today  I fly to New York to oversee his final couple of days' preparation. Not that I envisage there being too many difficulties decision to make. As expected, my able deputy Jimmy McCarthy has everything under control.

"Jamie Spencer will arrive on Friday, by which time I'm sure Michael  and I will have analysed the opposition to death. Jamie will also ride Side Glance for Andrew Balding at Monmouth on Sunday.

"There is a small chance Toast will stay on in the US to run in the Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park, but as things stand  he is far more likely to come home. Michael is keen to target the Dubai World Cup.

"My able team at home  are well briefed in this weeks domestic plans. The two-year-olds worked this morning, the monthly invoices were posted and the children were shown where the tin opener lives.

"I am looking forward to keeping you informed this week of developing building up to what is arguably the most important race of my 14-year training career.

"While in the departure lounge at Heathrow this afternoon I'll write about the logistics of getting the horse there and everything else about this adventure. "

@osbornejamie "One belongs to New York instantly, one belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years. " The trainer quotes American author and journalist Tom Wolfe to accompany a picture of Toast Of New York  being ridden by Jimmy McCarthy at Belmont racecourse. "
