"WHERE HOOVES BEAT TO SOUND OF THE SAMBA"

" ALTHOUGH it might not seem like it during the forthcoming World Cup , football is by no means the only sport in Brazil this summer.  Or winter, strictly speaking , according to the southern- hemisphere calendar .

"If they've got an awful lot of coffee in Brazil, as the old song goes, they've also got a fair bit of horseracing , even if the sport is not in the rudest of health.  In an attempt to cash in on the World Cup effect, they even moved the date  of the country's top race, the Grand Premio Brasil at Gavea in Rio: usually run on the first Sunday in August, the £240,000 event was run yesterday . The Maracana stadium, set to host the  World Cup final, used to house the city's racecourse before it was moved to its current site near the lagoon.

"Brazil even has its own superstar jockey in Jorge Ricardo, the former world leader in career victories with an astonishing  12,200 winners to his name.. A legend in his native Rio, 'Ricardinho' is back riding again after a serious injury that left him sidelined for five months, forfeiting his lead in the world-record race to his equally prolific North American rival Russell Baze in December.
