"CALIFORNIA CHROME'S
part-owner Steve Coburn has issues an unreserved apology for his extraordinary
outburst in the wake of the colt's defeat in Saturday's Belmont Stakes, which
cost him the Triple Crown, writes Nicholas Godfrey.
"Coburn, who owns
the Kentucky Derby winner with Perry Martin, has been roundly criticised for
comments made live on NBS Sports straight after the victory of Tonalist, in
which he claimed the winner's connections had taken "the coward's way out"
by not running their colt in either of the first two legs of the Triple Crown.

"He later said his
rivals were "a bunch of damned cheaters" ; then, in an appearance on
ABC's flagship Good Morning America on Sunday morning, Coburn said he had no
regrets" over his post-Belmont response only to return to the same
programme yesterday to retract his words.

"I'm very ashamed
of myself, " Coburn said. "I
need to apologise to the world. I sincerely apologise. "
"Accompanied on the
Monday show by his wife Caroline, who had attempted to control him on Saturday,
Coburn spoke in a voice quivering with emotion . "I wanted so much for
this horse to win the Triple Crown for the people of America. " he said.
"I was very
emotional. It was the emotion of everything coming together at one time. It's a
learning process. I'm going to do better. I needed to do this because I was
wrong. "
"California Chrome
dead- heated for fourth in the New York Classic, missing out on that elusive
Triple Crown by two lengths after fading inside the final furlong. He suffered
a minor hoof injury.
"Coburn added that
California Chrome was likely to need a couple of weeks to get over his injury
before resuming training for targets later this year. "
JMC: There are not many people
world wide who experience their horse trying to win the third and final leg of the
Triple Crown. So near yet so far away .... Raw emotion kicked in big time for Steve Coburn.. Hardly surprising.

Bloodhorse illiteracy is
the most dangerous practice world wide in horseracing. Both bloodhorse
illiteracy in practice and bloodhorse illiteracy in theory, both as dangerous as
each other. Due to the fact that people who are bloodhorse illiterate are being
allowed to regulate a sport to hand out evil unjust punishments to the
true bloodhorse literate achievers every day of the week. To libel and to slander so many innocent horseman's lives. All those who have achieved true bloodhorse literacy in their own right,
That is why horseracing is and
has always been such a good leveller in practice. The British horseracing
government, stewards and disciplinary people need to be brought down out of
their safety closet and sent for a month to ride out every day and to work
every day with a licensed British trainer. Sir Michael Stoute springs to mind
because he is so careful in all he does around racehorses in training. Which
would provide a safety net for those being tested out. Meaning if all those
being tested out on the first day were not up to any of the tasks at all. Sir
Michael would say in his quiet kind way "This is not for you, for safety's
sake you need to go home, before you get killed here. "
Stewards who have been and
are bluffing their way dishonestly through in one of what should be the most
wonderful sports of all time. Made great by true horsemen down through the ages.
